the story of NAF Ceramic

A life shaped by clay.

In 2019, Nursena was standing at the edge of one life when a small gift of clay opened another. What followed was a slow bloom — shaped by courage, curiosity and the belief that everyday objects can carry real art.

the beginning

The path appeared by hand.

01

Before the first cup

In her final year training to become a kindergarten teacher, Nursena realised that the future she had worked toward did not feel like the life she could inhabit forever. The answer was not clear yet — only the courage to keep looking.

02

A small gift, a new language

Jewellery, embroidery, painting and woodworking had filled her childhood. Then her boyfriend — now her husband — placed air-drying clay and a painting set in her hands. Clay gathered every language she loved into one material.

03

Learning to stay with the material

Home experiments became formal classes, exchanges with ceramic artists and years of testing. In Kütahya — where ceramic memory lives around every corner — technical curiosity met a tradition much older than the atelier.

time is part of the craft

A week held in the hands.

A single cup can take about a week to become itself. Drying cannot be hurried. Fire cannot be negotiated with. Every pause leaves room for the next gesture.

  1. 01

    Clay

Every piece begins as a quiet weight in the palm — soft, responsive and full of possible directions.

  2. 02

    Shape

The form is pinched, curved and coaxed by hand. A rim is allowed to wander; a handle learns its own curl.

  3. 03

    The first fire

Only when completely dry does the piece enter the kiln. The fragile clay becomes a strong, porous ceramic biscuit.

  4. 04

    Drawing & flowers

Words, stems and petals arrive under the brush. Every mark is painted directly onto the form, with no transfer to hide behind.

  5. 05

    Glaze

A clear glaze settles over the drawings like glass, protecting the colours while keeping the evidence of the hand beneath.

  6. 06

    The second fire

Heat transforms everything once more. The surface deepens, the colours wake, and an everyday object becomes a lasting piece of functional art.

the NAF signature

The hand is never edited out.

Wavy rims, curling handles, handwritten notes and painted botanicals are not decoration added at the end. They are the architecture of each piece — small traces that let the maker remain present in the object.

painted one petal at a time

Every flower becomes a memory.

A birth flower, a private sentence, a colour remembered from a garden — personal details turn functional ceramics into keepsakes. No transfer, no mould and no second piece exactly the same.

from Kütahya, outward

From one small atelier, outward.

The first finished pieces were tested, lived with and given to friends. Then Etsy opened the atelier door to the world: NAF Ceramic reached homes across five continents and more than fifteen countries.

still becoming

The circle is still opening.

The dream now is a larger studio: a place where new pieces bloom, and where children and adults can learn ceramics together. The path that once turned away from a classroom may yet return to teaching — this time, through clay.
